Blackline Safety’s real-time gas readings and remote monitoring helped an Illinois fire crew make fast decisions in a gas leak emergency.
During a severe storm, lightning struck a tree on Deerfield Lane in Bartlett, Illinois, causing the tree to catch fire and damaging a nearby underground natural gas main. When Bartlett Fire District responded, the visible fire and damaged gas main were only part of the concern. Escaping natural gas was migrating underground through the storm-sewer system and into areas surrounding several residences.
Responders faced a real challenge: even if firefighters had already checked a home, conditions inside were liable to change, requiring repeated entries into possibly dangerous environments. For command, keeping track of firefighter location and the atmospheric readings for each residence required technology that could make the process smooth and safe.

Bartlett Fire relied on Blackline Safety’s portable connected gas detectors and Blackline Live software to take on this critical incident. They needed a connected gas solution that could help them understand exactly what was happening across the scene in the moment: where firefighters were, what atmospheric conditions they were encountering, and whether those conditions were changing.
Rather than requiring personnel to repeatedly enter homes simply to obtain another atmospheric reading, crews were able to place Blackline monitors inside selected residences and leave them in place. From the command post, personnel could then continuously watch the readings in Blackline Live and immediately identify any increase in gas concentrations.

Blackline’s connected safety platform also provides fire and hazmat safety solutions like automated location-stamped data and incident details, including live gas exposure levels. Command personnel could track firefighter locations and see gas readings from their devices in real time, rather than waiting for crews to radio back what they were encountering.
Traditional gas detection, like Bartlett Fire’s previous beep-and-flash devices, can provide critical information to the firefighter wearing the device, but Chief William Gabrenya wanted to extend that visibility back to incident command so they could make faster decisions that would protect the lives of their crews and the public.

Because Blackline Safety's connected system is specifically designed to provide real-time gas data and location information remotely, decision-makers get a clearer picture of conditions without unnecessarily placing additional personnel into a hazardous environment—exactly what Gabrenya was looking for.
Tra gli altri vantaggi figurano:
Real-time data that continuously updates so command is never in the dark.
Easy to calibrate devices with multi-gas detection, so firefighters are protected in any environment.
Robust, rugged hardware that’s drop-and-go ready for real-time monitoring.
We made the conscious decision to invest in technology that would provide our firefighters and incident commanders with more than just a reading on a handheld meter.
Bartlett Fire District needed to replace their aging gas detectors and were looking for a device that provided more visibility back to incident command.
They selected Blackline Safety’s portable gas detectors for the real-time gas and location data that keeps all teams informed and firefighters out of harm’s way as much as possible.
When a severe lightning storm damaged a natural gas main, Bartlett Fire used Blackline devices to remotely monitor gas migration and exposure, keeping the community safe.
